When Compassion Becomes a Burden

What animals can teach us about boundaries, acceptance, and the limits of control

As an animal empath, the pain of animal suffering can feel beyond unbearable. We hurt at a deep level that can be hard to live with at times.

So the desire to take action is irresistible. We feel we need to save every animal possible.

And after all, life is short. In order to make an impact in the world, we want to do as much as we can in this moment.

We want to soothe the pain of suffering, and heal the world’s animals. And having that desire is a wonderful trait, until it starts to affect our life in a negative way and drain our energy.

It’s like we have to pace ourselves so we don’t completely burn out. Have you ever felt this way?

If you have, know that you’re a beautiful, kind, and caring soul. And because of that, it’s important to preserve your energy and put it where it’s needed most, without going beyond what your mind, heart and body can withstand.

Animals know this. They care about us, and they care about each other.

They take care of their puppies, kittens, foals or whatever their offspring may be. But they also know about self-preservation.

They understand their limits, and aren’t overdoing it to the point of burning themselves out. They understand self-care, and unfortunately, their care may only be lacking when they rely on a human who neglects them.

Consider this:

  • They take naps when it’s needed.
  • They’re not shy about eating to keep up their strength.
  • They may live in a herd or pack where they can get support for survival.
  • They don’t overdo it unless they’re pushed beyond their boundaries by humans.
  • Although they love us, they don’t go to a level where they’re severely stressed out because of their empathy.

Animals are happy to share their positive and loving energy, while being authentic to themselves and their own needs. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed to the point where it’s adversely affecting your life:

  • How can you create balance?
  • Where do you need to cut back on over-extending yourself?
  • How can you help, while keeping your life and energy intact?
  • In what ways can you love yourself in the same way you love animals?

The truth is, you deserve to love yourself as much as you love them. And you may even consider whether there’s a lack of self-worth in your heart, that may be keeping you from truly caring for yourself.

These are thoughts and questions to journal on. And this isn’t about shaming yourself which drives your self-worth even lower, but stepping back and seeing the bigger picture.

Look at the situation as though you’re your own best friend. What would they tell you about how the actions you’re taking are impacting your life?

If you care about yourself as much as your best friend would, what steps would you take to nurture yourself more? Because it’s time to give yourself a break.

Yes, you deserve a time out and a rethink about where you are, and where having great empathy can lead you if you’re not careful. Imagine giving yourself a hug and a feeling of appreciation for everything you have done in your life.

Appreciate who you are to the point where you preserve yourself and your beautiful heart. Whether you realize it or not, you deserve to be treated the way you treat animals, and the way your animals want you to treat yourself.

As someone who connects with animals both living and in spirit, the recurring message from them is about self-love. The main thing they want for their human friends is to take care of themselves as much as we took care of them, if not more.

Animals don’t apologize for self-preservation, and you don’t need to either. So, remember to take care of you – unapologetically.
