Ever feel like you’re wandering alone in the dark through life? Or things seem foggy, and you keep feeling stuck? You’re not alone.
It’s hard when you’re lacking complete clarity on your direction, and you feel lost in the fog. It can waste so much time and energy when you don’t know your way, and you feel like you’re spinning in circles.
It’s epecially difficult when you’re not living life on purpose (and this relates to any area of your life). This happens because you don’t have the abundant clarity you need, in order to know what direction to head in. And it comes down to understanding yourself better.
This is something that empaths in particular struggle with, because we pick up on the noise around us; and sometimes what we think we want is what someone else actually wants. So we lose our way in feelings that don’t belong to us.
And what really helps with getting back to who we really are, is knowing our core values. Those values can make or break our direction in life.
I was reminded of this when I went looking at moving somewhere else. I kept searching and searching for the “right” home to live in, but I was compromising my own needs and desires because of rules and restrictions that I couldn’t live with.
I would look at a place and think “well, I guess this one’s okay”, but it really wasn’t; so I’d end up backing out of accepting that place. Then I was reminded of a core value of mine that’s #1 for me: Freedom.
And what freedom means to me is having my animals that I love, including my goat “Duff” who’s more like a dog. You see, Duff comes to me when I call him, rests his head in my lap while I pet him; and acts like any other loving, furry member of the family.
But in the area that I was looking to move to, having a goat wasn’t allowed. Over and over again I was told “no agricultural animals are allowed here”. I was thinking: “This isn’t a cow. It’s an animal that’s like a dog, but with horns”. (Of course, this seems ridiculous if you’re not an animal lover.)
Some people suggested that I “get rid of the goat”, but when an animal is like a family member – it’s simply not possible to leave them behind. There was no way I was going to let go of an old friend and wonder if he was okay. (Not to mention that some people eat goats.)
You see to me, having my animals is part of that core value of Freedom. It’s the freedom to live my life the way I choose, without restrictions. But your values may be completely different, and that’s what makes you special.
That’s why when I work with clients, we go through a list of 36 core values. My clients look at them and choose their top ten values, then we elimate half of those so we get down to five values, and finally we eliminate two of those values to get to their top three.
Keep in mind there’s no right or wrong value – because we’re all different. But once we get down to the top three, we look at what things they need to do to live in alignment with those three values.
Based on that information, we create a Life Mission Statement of how they’ll want to live their life in order to stay on track and not get stuck. This becomes their guiding light.
So in my life when I was faced with a choice that wasn’t in alignment with one of my core values, I had to say “no thanks”. Because I know that in the long run I won’t be happy with the situation, and I’ll simply end up searching for what’s true for me.
The bottom line is: Don’t compromise on what’s important to you. And if you’re not abundantly clear on what IS important, it’s time to dive into your core values and create that “light house” that will shine brightly for you and help guide your way.
First of all, it’s important to know that you’re worthy of living a life that’s authentic to who you are. So having a sense of self-worth is important too.
Ultimately, get back to loving YOU. Know that your life is important and what you have to offer the world is special. You have a unique purpose.
But in order to live in alignment with that purpose, it’s important to get clear on the values that will guide you to where you need to be. The world needs you, and exactly the person you are. So, let YOUR light shine; for all to see.
