The Empath’s Survival Guide to the Holidays

Finding peace this holiday season—with wisdom from our animal companions.

No one feels the stress of the holidays more than an empath. We feel everything, and all of the stress that’s floating through the air impacts us on every level of our being.

The tension increases because there’s so much to be done; from cooking, to shopping and trying to squeeze in everyone we want to see. Tensions can also run high from family members, and grief can hit us when we least expect it.

It’s a time of remembering and reflecting, because it’s the end of another year. And maybe it was a year of loss, or struggle in some way. There can be good memories along with the memories we’d just soon forget.

As humans, we go through so much on a mental and emotional level; especially with all of our responsiblities. However, we can learn how to manage the stress from the wisdom of our animal companions.

Here’s some wise guidance from the animal realm, told in the form of metaphors and stories. It’s the heart and soul of our animal companions, and how they deal with life based on their own unique personalities.

  • The Horses want you to know that it’s time to “take things in stride”. No matter how crazy life may seem; keep trotting along through it all, with your mane and tail flowing in the breeze. Life is better when you go with the flow.
  • The Ducks would say that even though you’re paddling like crazy underneath the surface, when the rain falls it’s good to let it roll off your back. That built in personal protection – like waterproof feathers keeps you safe from the storms of life.
  • The Cats know how to stay calm when necessary: Curl up; whether it’s by the fire or with a good book. Find a soft spot to chill, and go within for calmness.
  • Dogs tell you that no matter what happens, keep that tail wagging. Find joy in everything, and be playful like a child. Often as adults, we lose the ability to have fun and laugh at the little things. So, embody that playful canine spirit.
  • The Goats find stability in staying grounded. They connect with the rocks and the earth, where they get their strength. (My own goats love to dig into the earth and make a cozy spot to lay down.) So connect with Mother Earth, or if you can’t get outside; then use your powerful imagination to visualize it.
  • Our companion Birds such as parrots and others want to let you know to not hold back when it comes to expressing yourself. Whether it’s singing a song or squawking out your own tune, it’s okay to let it out and be who you truly are.
  • Even the Reptiles ask: Are you basking in the glow of life? Life can seem cold, or it can bring warmth; it all depends on where you put your focus.

You can also tap into the wisdom of your own animal companions; either through animal communication (which I do, as well as teach). But you can also receive a simple message by taking a deep breath, and thinking of an animal (alive or in spirit) that loves you.

Then ask them to send you a message. What comes to mind first – an image, word or feeling? Write it down to remember it, and read it back to yourself.

So from the animal realm in general and your loving animal companions, what are they trying to tell you? What lessons can you learn from them?

Animals are amazing teachers, and help us so much; through both their companionship and wisdom. Everyday, we can connect to their comfort and insight for healing, guidance and clarity.
