Simple ways to come back to yourself
The news lately has been enough to fry any caring person’s heart. It’s been soul crushing, especially if you’re an empath and feel everything. It can seem like the “dark night of the soul”, and can lead to anxiety, depression or even physical issues if you’re not careful.
So what can you do? It’s hard to avoid the news, social media and people in general who are busy talking about the issues of the day. It can make you want to run and hide, at a time when it’s the busiest season of the year.
We feel like we have to keep pushing through, and carrying on; even when we feel utterly exhausted. But the truth is, it’s no way to treat the powerful being that we are. Because all of the vampire-like energy draining information, will continue to effect us in a negative way.
And then we’re no longer helpful to ourselves or others. What’s an empath to do? Here’s some insight and a lifeline to help pull you back to center. (After all, the world needs your special self in a way that’s whole and not drained.) Check out these five suggestions:
- Take the Pressure Off. It’s time to stop pushing yourself. If you feel like you’re taking two steps forward and one step backward, then you’re trying too hard. Allow yourself a moment to catch your breath, with any type of break you can possibly take. What would feel refreshing to you? Write it down.
- Step Back from the Noise. Take a social media break. Cut back on the news or other information that brings you down. Send love, light or healing energy to those affected, and then have a rest from it. Allow yourself to be you again.
- Breathe and Tune In: Put one hand on your stomach area, and the other hand over your heart. Then take in a few cleansing breaths and tune in to how you feel. Imagine healing white light in those areas, as though it’s shining in from the sun. Repeat when needed.
- Schedule Time for Yourself: You probably have everyone else on your schedule, but what about making time for you? Pencil yourself in, or put it on your phone calendar. Remind yourself that your time is precious and you deserve some of it.
- Laughter as Medicine: Have you had a good belly laugh lately? Maybe you have a favorite movie you haven’t watched in awhile, or a friend you haven’t talked to lately that would bring a smile to your face. (Maybe it’s time to give them a call instead of just a text message and have a laugh or two.) Laughter is a great healer and helps us to get back to center.
And of course, animals can help with all of these. So you can:
- Take a dog for a walk and breathe in some air.
- Check out funny animal videos or a movie.
- Spend time with animals in nature. (I love hanging out with horses.) Or, seeing wildlife.
It’s time to let your nervous system settle and take a break from the noise, so you can feel into yourself again. Getting back to what’s true for you, so that you can live your life authentically and have the energy you need to enjoy living in the best way possible.
As always, it’s another lesson in self-love for those of us who give so much to others. So take care of you, and know there is support that’s both seen and unseen.
But first, make the choice to focus on you and your needs. You deserve it.
If this piece resonated with you, I want you to know something important: You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
Sometimes restoration begins simply by being seen, heard, and reflected back to — without pressure, fixing, or rushing.
If you’re feeling stuck, burned out, or quietly longing for clarity around your next steps, I offer Clarity & Purpose calls as a gentle space to pause, listen inward, and reconnect with what truly matters to you.
These calls aren’t about forcing answers — they’re about creating space for them to emerge.
