When Loving Animals Breaks Your Heart

A guide for sensitive souls who carry the weight of the world—and still want to help.

Another day, another barrage of news and posts that tug at our heart, and sometimes break it. Pictures of elephants in chains, dogs that are in cages in places where they eat dog meat, and even the supposedly innocent “look at me – I shot a deer!” by that friend that you didn’t know was a hunter.

Yes, we know… hunting feeds people. But do we need to see it? How can we congratulate them when it looks brutal and we can almost feel the pain of the animal?

Those of us who are sensitive to the sights and sounds of animals that are neglected, suffering or no longer living can hit us hard. Because the truth is, animal empaths FEEL everything when it comes to animals.

Sometimes it’s shocking. After all, we didn’t ask for it; nor did we need to see it.

We can feel a huge range of emotions: Anger, sadness, hopelessness and more. It’s like being on a roller coaster ride inside of a blender, waiting for when someone is going to press the high-speed button.

So we leave comments where we try to fight back, share our sorrow, or simply look away in disgust. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to do.

We have to be careful; because feeling it in our heart, head or gut can lead to physical issues. We don’t want to get sick, and then we’re unable to care for ourselves, others and animals too.

After all, we’re healers. We want to make the world a better place. Nature is where we often feel most at home, and surrounding ourselves with the sweetness of our fur babies is our happy place.

So, what can you do to make a difference in the world, while still protecting yourself from harm? Here’s some suggestions:

  • Limit the time you spend exposing yourself to information. You can still stay informed without being bombarded and stressing out your nervous system. Make your point if needed, unfollow disturbing accounts and limit your scrolling time. Counteract the negativity by watching something that’s positive about animals.
  • Honor your heart and your body. When you see or hear something that physically or emotionally hurts, put your hand over your heart and say “I care, but I’m releasing the discomfort in my heart and body”. Visualize a healing white light around the animal, and send them love and support. Then ask yourself “what do I need to feel grounded again?” and go do it.
  • Focus on what you CAN do. If you see a disturbing post, tag an animal organization in the comments and ask others to support them. Donate to rescues if you’re able, or volunteer your time. And as always, love the animals you’re with. Every little thing counts.
  • Surround yourself with a safe, like-minded community. It’s important to have the support of others who understand how you feel and to know you’re not alone. You’re invited to join the Animal Angel Connection group on Facebook, and you can also talk with others who understand where you’re coming from. Take a walk in nature with another animal empath friend.
  • Turn your pain to purpose. What hidden message could there be that’s moving you down your path to your true purpose? If you’re feeling lost or stuck, you’re invited to schedule a complimentary Clarity & Purpose session to receive an intuitive animal message and dive deeper into your dream direction by scheduling a call here.

You don’t need to suffer, and of course suffering doesn’t help animals. Have some boundaries, nurture yourself and do things that allow you to feel empowered.

Changing the world doesn’t happen overnight; but you can take one step at a time. And surrounding yourself with others who are on a similar mission gives you added support.

Your gifts are needed: Now more than ever. So gently shine your light sweet soul, and you’ll be a compassionate warrior that impacts the world in your own unique way.
